Wednesday Walking, Tutukaka Coast, Term 4

We resume weekly Wednesday morning walks on October 8, this will be a 10 or 11 week term.

We enjoyed a wonderful variety of walks throughout Term 3, only missing one Wednesday due to the winter weather. A great group of walkers, new friendships have been formed and despite different walking levels, we all seem to fall in step, everyone looking out for each other. Some are brisk, some are mindful, some manage to be both and we all end up together at the end!

Term 4, Koanga/Spring is a magical season of new life on the Tutukaka Coast, either at the moana or in the ngahere, puawananga/clematis flower of the skies, continues to flower, the mana/birds are singing and swooping! Look out for the arrival of Pīpīwharauroa.  “Ka tangi te wharauroa, ko nga karere a Mahuru” meaning “If the shining cuckoo cries, it is the messenger of Spring”.

Menopause Yoga

I am part way through MY (Menopause Yoga) Teacher Training with Petra Coveney in the UK. Menopause Yoga is the world’s 1st professionally accredited yoga and wellbeing programme supporting people through their menopause – and beyond. The Menopause Yoga programme unites western medical science with eastern wellbeing to support your mind, body and emotions.

The training includes specially modified yoga poses, breathing techniques and meditation practices to help with menopause symptoms alongside evidence-based medical health, nutrition, natural remedies and wellbeing guidance. Workshops can also include womens circles and journalling.

I am looking forward to sharing these new learnings with you all in special weekend workshops and classes once my training is complete around the beginning of August.

Term 3 Wednesday Walking on the Tutukaka Coast

We resume weekly Wednesday morning walks on July 23, this will be a 9 week term. We are a lovely bunch of walkers, some are brisk, some are mindful and some manage to be both! Term 3 welcomes return of the light with a variety of uplifting walks, either at the moana or in the ngahere and it is Kowhai season soon, the tuis will be close by. Yoga for Tennis Players

I’ve recently taken up tennis at my local Ngunguru Sports Club and am loving it.

Yoga is an incredible tool to balance out your body if you play a lot of tennis, helping with increased flexibility & suppleness, injury prevention, improved shoulder mobility, balance, lengthening of muscles and coordination in addition to better focus, concentration, and breathing.

Yoga Class with Tennis Focus

Below are just a few of the poses in our class today:

  • Wrist stretches to decrease risk of tennis elbow
  • Broken toe pose for the feet, wrist flicks to distract from feet
  • Downward dog to stretch the back of the legs and lengthen the back muscles
  • Warrior 2 to stretch hip flexors and open the chest (cactus arms)
  • Low lunge reaching for back foot to stretch quads and help prevent knee injuries
  • Supine twist starting with knees close to chest (tennis requires a lot of strength based twisting)
  • Supine pigeon (lie down, ankle across opposite knee, reach through and pull bottom leg towards you
  • Shoulder stretch holding the ends of a strap behind your back, one elbow up and the other behind your back (cow face pose)

The last one can also be done with your tennis racket. 😁
