When Svadisthana chakra is balanced it harmonises the fluids of the body, gives a sense of flow and free movement, eases arthritis and blood disorders. Svadisthana is concerned with watery things – circulation, urination, menstruation, tears.
Spiritually, Svadisthana, the colour of orange, is the dwelling place of the Self, concerned with our likes, dislikes, impulses and desires, sensuality and emotions, being comfortable with our sexuality and relationships, including relationships with ourselves – being content with our selves. Our needs are often habitual negative beliefs held at an unconscious level. Stress involved in ‘I must ‘ and ‘I have to’ can affect our bladder and give us increased urge. Energy is constantly looking to be used, otherwise it can give us trouble! Svadisthana is about change and letting go, like Muladhara, it is a place to release negative unconscious energy, to let go of perfectionism, release emotions and allow our energy to rise up to the higher chakras and increasing awareness. It is about Patience – letting go the hips!
If Svadisthana is balanced our desires no longer dominate, we are more aware of others. It brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, patience, openness to pleasure, ability to accept and embrace change, open to new experiences, ‘go with the flow’, a sense of harmony.
Poses creating stability in the low spine and pelvis, yet free movement of the hips
I like to think of the upright Malasana and frog squat/ Manduki – practise 3 of these each day!

Parsvokanasana/extended side angle , 3 legged dog with level pelvis and lovely long lines, allows free flowing transition in a vinyasa practice.

and Cobra/Bhujangasana, again with pelvis level and anchored, the legs rolling inward to create space in the lower spine , pelvis broad, belly lifted, feeling the pubic bone.
